News Analysis
The report "Delay in signing MoU may affect RGCB's prospects" (August 28, 2006 Internet edition and August 29, 2006 print editions) said the the RGCB [the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram] would "be the seventh national biotechnology research institute under the DBT [Department of Bio-Technology]." Readers pointed out that the list had only five centres the National Institute of Immunology, Delhi, the National Brain Research Centre, Manesar, Haryana, the Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Orissa, the National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, and the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting, Hyderabad. Our Special Correspondent, Thiruvananthapuram, clarifies that the RGCB will be the eighth national biotechnology research centre under the DBT, and not the seventh as reported. The two centres not named are the Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development, Imphal, Manipur, and the National Centre for Plant Genome Research, JNU, New Delhi. A reader points out that in "Imported pulse, wheat arrive" (Earlier editions, August 29, 2006), the prices of urad and moong were quoted as Rs. 3,050 to Rs. 3,325 a tonne of urad and Rs. 3,125 a tonne of moong. These prices should have been for a quintal. In "Are Asians facing a witch-hunt in mid-air?" (Editorial page, August 25, 2006) a reader points out that the quotation from The Independent is incomplete. It was: "What happened on this flight was nothing less than mob rule. Instead of standing up to the irrational fears of passengers. This does not seem to be an isolated incident ... ." Hasan Suroor clarifies that it should have been: "What happened ... Instead of standing up to the irrational fears of passengers, the airline's staff capitulated to them ... an isolated incident." In the report "Massa takes pole" ("Sport", August 27, 2006) it was stated that BMW's Nico Rosberg missed out to come in the first ten. A reader points out that Nico Rosberg drives for Williams and not BMW. It was an error in the AFP report. In "Abhijeet Gupta inches closer to title" ("Sport", August 29, 2006) the text said that "Leaders Mary and Padmini" will clash in the next round [of the Parsvnath National junior chess championship at New Delhi]." The results table showed Mary as having six points and Padmini as having five points. The Sports Desk clarifies that the sentence should have been "Leader Mary ... " The UNI report "Sania drops out of top 50" (Karnataka, "Sport", August 29, 2006) said that French Amelie Mauresmo (2470) leads the pack followed by Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne (3078). The points for Mauresmo should have been 3,470 and she is first. With reference to the item "Freescale expands presence in Bangalore" ("Business" page "Snippets", August 18, 2006), Mr. Madhusudan Bhaskaran, Corporate Communications Manager-India, Freescale Semiconductor India Pvt. Ltd., says that Freescale is not a fabless semiconductor company and has 10 manufacturing units in the Americas/APAC and EMEA region. It has seven wholly-owned wafer fabs, two assembly and test sites and a 300-millimeter pilot line. It has design, research and development (R&D), manufacturing or sales operations in more than 30 countries. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
