Bid to ensure healthy atmosphere

CHENNAI:
Minister for Information Parithi Ilamvazhuthi on Monday informed the Assembly that the Government had instructed the licensing authorities and Superintendents of Police to make surprise inspections of theatres whenever new films are released and take action against those providing extra seats.
Cinemagoers should be entertained in a healthy atmosphere, and that they should enjoy the movie comfortably. The licensing authorities had been asked to take stern action against those who did not maintain the theatres properly.
"Since cinema is one of the popular means of entertainment and since the patrons pay considerably for such entertainment, it will not be unreasonable to expect the licensee of the theatre to maintain it in a hygienic condition and to ensure proper facilities are provided," the Minister said.
Referring to the Video Piracy Cell, which now functions under the Additional Director-General of Police (Crime), Chennai, the Minister said the Government directed that the services of this cell be utilised to check violations of the Copy Right Act and the Information Technology Act 2000. The number of cases registered up to April this year had come down to 3 against 13 in 2005.
