GUNTUR: The Students Federation of India (SFI), Guntur unit, has reportedly received a letter from girl students of Pedakurapadu Welfare Hostel accusing the in-charge warden of torturing them for speaking about hostel problems. A team of 10 cyclists of the SFI completed a 16-day rally on Tuesday covering 38 mandals of the district and some 140 hostels as part of a campaign. The team members were shocked to receive a letter from the students whom they met four days ago.
In bad shape
When the rally reached Pedakurapadu, they noticed the sorry state of affairs at the welfare hostel and enquired about the goings-on from students. Though the students did not talk to them elaborately, they could gauge the seriousness of the problems existing there. The students later met the cyclists in the neighbouring village and explained about their problems. In the letter they purportedly wrote to the SFI, the students charged the in-charge warden with beating and torturing them for explaining about their problems to the SFI team. While the Government announced supply of eggs to all students, the warden never gave them, the students charged. Unhygienic conditions in toilets due to lack of proper water supply was another problem dogging the students. The students reportedly told the SFI team that the warden was drawing funds for 78 students while only 35 students stayed there regularly. The team completed 800 km of travel and proposed to enter Guntur city on September 2 and submit a memorandum to the district Collector after organising a dharna, said SFI district secretary Lenin.
