ONGOLE : Municipal Commissioner Challa Anuradha has warned units selling packaged drinking water without ISI or BIS marks that action would be taken against them as per High Court orders.

She issued notices to 20 such units in Prakasam district that they would be prosecuted under the Food Adulteration (Prevention) Act, 1955. She asked people not to consume packaged water without ISI certification as it would be harmful to their health. Notices were issued to Warrier mineral water, Amrutha, Rakshin, Aditya, Annamaya mineral water units at Ongole, Deepthi at Ethamukkala, Gangotri, Number One, Wipro, Malineni and Industry mineral water units at Singarayakonda, Kaveri mineral water unit at Kandukur, Pure Drops and Priyanka at Darsii, Himasagar, Siva Gangotri at Markapur, Dondapadu Gangotri at Pamuru, MRK mineral water, Pearl at Chirala, Ranga mineral water at Kanigiri.

Court directive

In a public interest litigation filed by Sykam Bhaskara Rao, chairman of Machilipatnam consumer protection council, the High Court directed the Municipal Administration Department to issue advertisements in English and Telugu newspapers every 15 days for the next three months giving names and other details of units that were engaged in manufacture and or bottling, sale and supply of drinking water which do not have the ISI certification.
