Thanjavur: Samba transplantation is going on in full swing in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts. The plan, according to Agriculture department officials, is to raise samba on one lakh hectares in Thanjavur district and 1.08 lakh hectares in Tiruvarur district. Nurseries have been raised on 2,500 hectares in Thanjavur district and transplantation completed on 2,365 hectares. In Tiruvarur district, transplantation has been completed on 250 hectares. The farmers have raised the CR1009 variety. With the water available and judging the pace at which the transplantation is going on, Agriculture department officials hope to achieve the target for samba. With respect to Kuruvai, the target of 40,000 hectares has been exceeded and the crop raised on 43,447 hectares in Thanjavur district. So far harvest has been completed on 2,750 hectares in Thanjavur district. The yield varied from 4.9 tonnes to 6 tonnes per hectare. In Tiruvarur district, Kuruvai harvest has been completed on 950 hectares out of 35,000 hectares covered.
