VELLORE: A member of a fleeing gang of dacoits was shot at and arrested by Vellore Superintendent of Police M. Ashok Kumar at Vellakuttai near Vaniyambadi on Monday night. The six-member gang, speeding in two stolen cars, was trying to evade the police net. They had waylaid one of the vehicles and snatched jewels and cash from the occupants on the ghat road leading to the Yelagiri hills. According to the police, the gang, which came in a stolen car from Chennai, parked the vehicle across the road at the 10th hairpin bend. Saravanababu (38), a businessman of Ambur who was returning in his car along with his wife and two other relatives from the Yelagiri hills, was forced to stop. The gang threatened them at knifepoint and forced the women to part with their jewels weighing 13 sovereigns, Rs. 4,600 and four cell phones. On getting information about the incident, DIG of Police Ramesh Kudawla and the SP alerted all police stations. When the local police tried to corner the gang at a petrol bunk in Alangayam, the culprits threw country bombs and escaped.
