Ryot commits suicide

ANANTAPUR: A farmer, Obulesu (38), allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday unable to repay debt piled up for sinking borewells to protect the crop on four acres of ancestral land. The farmer of Peddakotla village in Tadimarri mandal of the district had sunk 10 borewells in the last couple of years, all of which had dried up. He ended his life by consuming poisonous pills. - Staff Reporter

Man, son end life

KURNOOL: Y. Naganna (50) and his son Venkataramana (22) committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Dhone in Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reports, the father and son quarrelled over financial troubles leading to the son consuming pesticide. The shocked father, too, consumed poison and died. - Staff Reporter

Privatisation opposed

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation has demanded dropping of the move to privatise loss-making routes of the corporation. In a statement on Tuesday federation leaders criticised Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's reported statement asking RTC to hand over the loss-making routes to private transporters. - Special Correspondent

YSR reminded of promise

HYDERABAD: The CPI (M) State Committee has appealed to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to honour his party's election promise on distribution of land to the rural poor. B.V. Raghavulu, party secretary, in a letter to Dr. Reddy, wanted the administration to distribute house-sites in Government, endowments and tenant lands to the poor and sanction them passbooks. - Special Correspondent

Teacher ends life

ANANTAPUR: R. Parasuramaiah, a Telugu pandit at ZP High School in Chilamattur, allegedly committed suicide on Monday night in his fields near Budidagaddapalli village of Gorantla mandal by consuming pesticide mixed in liquor. His body was found on Tuesday morning. He left a note stating that nobody was responsible for his suicide. - Staff Reporter

Farmers' protest

KURNOOL: Farmers stormed the irrigation office of Tungabhadra Low Level Canal at Gonegandla here on Tuesday and locked the office, protesting against poor flow in the canal. They said the flow in the canal declined as the farmers in the upper reaches were using more than their quota. — Staff Reporter

Selection list

KADAPA: List of provisionally selected candidates for certain posts in Rajiv Institute of Medical Sciences has been put up in the Collectorate on Tuesday.

It includes names of candidates selected for junior assistants, store keepers, record assistants, house keepers and refractionist. Candidates could file objections by September 2 at a counter in the Collectorate, Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said. — Staff Reporter

Free coaching

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Study Circle for Backward Classes is inviting applications from Backward Classes, Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes candidates for providing free coaching for the Bank Probationary Officers Examinations. Candidates belonging to Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Nalgonda districts and whose parents' annual income is less than Rs. 44,500 can apply. Foundation stone laid

HYDERABAD: A foundation was laid for the Phase III expansion of Hyderabad based Pitti Laminations Limited at Nandigaon village in Mahabubnagar on Sunday. The company is setting up the project for fabrication of `steel stator bodiesand core dropping operations' to cater to the requirements of its customer in GE (USA) as well as the domestic ones. The Rs. 40 crore project would be commissioned in April 2007.

Stir against quota decried

Kakinada: The BC Ayikya Sangharshana samithi at its meeting here on Tuesday with Chollangi Venugopal state vice president in the chair, deplored the stir launched by some sections against the reservations provided to BCs in higher educational Institutions by the Central government. In a resolution it regretted the BC MLAs were keeping quiet on the anti-reservations stir and demanded leaders who cannot safeguard the rights of BCs should resign. It has decided to organise a meet that is purely `apolitical ' on September 3 to decide the course of action. — Correspondent

Land acquisition for reservoir

Srikakulam : Joint Collector M. Veerabrahmaiah said acquisition of 10,000 acres for the Heeramandalam reservoir required for the Vamsadhara project would be completed by December. Reviewing land acquisition proceedings in various land acquisition units on Tuesday, the Joint Collector stressed the importance of cooperation among departments. The departments of revenue, forest, irrigation and horticulture would have to work in tandem to complete the work, Mr. Veerabrahamiah said. — Correspondent

Lineman killed

VIZIANAGARAM : D. Adiappadu (40), a lineman with APTRANSCO was killed when a speeding tanker hit his two-wheeler at Gotlam T-junction on NH-43 on Tuesday, according to Bondapalli police. The police are investigating.

Call to youth to join politics

VIZIANAGARAM: National convenor of Lok Satta Jayaprakash Narayan has called upon the youth to not shy away from politics but join hands to put an end to the present depraved politics. Interacting with college students on Tuesday, Dr. Narayan said though the youth constitute 73 per cent of the population, siblings of a few politicians were holding positions by inheritance. ''In a democracy hereditary politics has no place,'' he said and added Lok Satta would strive to usher in a new political order by involving youth, women, weaker sections and the middle-class.

Minister calls on fire victims

Kakinada: Union Minister of State for Defence Mallipudi Pallam Raju on Tuesday visited Adikumbheswera Swamy temple area along the beach road where 25 thatched houses were gutted on Vinayaka Chavithi and assured the fire victims of loans. He instructed MRO Ch Sattiraju to arrange for distribution of rice to the fire victims. City Mayor K Saroja and deputy Mayor Bunny were present.
