THRISSUR: Governor R.L. Bhatia has emphasised the role of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and voluntary agencies in the development of infrastructure in various fields, particularly in the public health sector. Inaugurating the `Hridayapurvam' charity programme of the Global Kerala Foundation here on Tuesday, the Governor said even though the State had made tremendous advancements in the health and education sectors, the quality of infrastructure was not being upgraded because of the lack of resources. "On its own the Government has a lot of limitations, however noble and good-intentioned its plans and projects are. It is obviously in this context the activities of voluntary organisations and NGOs merit mention," the Governor said. "In a country like ours, the poor and the middle class are always at the receiving end. The number of patients who throng government hospitals for relief is ever on the increase. And it is against the background the focused schemes of action initiated by the Global Kerala Foundation becomes most cardinal," Mr. Bhatia said. Foundation chairman M.A. Yusuff Ali announced that 100 heart surgeries would be conducted free of cost under the `Hridayapurvam' charity project. Singer K.J. Yesudas, Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, M.M. Hassan, vice-chairman of the Foundation C.K. Menon and working chairman of the foundation Rajmohan were among those who spoke .
