CPI(M) to oppose labour policy: Pandhe

Staff Reporter

Plans all-India strike on December 14

ALAPPUZHA: The CPI(M) and the CITU would oppose the move of the Union Government to introduce a bill in Parliament to facilitate implementation of a hire-and-fire policy in the labour market, CITU president M.K. Pandhe said.

Inaugurating a district level rally of the CPI(M) here on Monday, Mr. Pandhe said the Left parties and trade unions would organise an all-India strike on December 14 in protest against the "anti-worker policy of the UPA Government." The Union Government's policy would end the concept of job security, he said.

He said various trade unions in the country had realised the anti-labour nature of the UPA Government and a common platform against the UPA Government was being formed. He said the central committee of the CPI(M), which is scheduled to meet in September, would draft a plan for agitation against the UPA Government.

Mr. Pandhe said the UPA Government was not showing any interest in implementing the common minimum programme.

He said the Government had not made any effort to introduce the women's reservation Bill and agricultural labourers bill in Parliament as promised in the CMP.

The employment guarantee scheme of the UPA Government was not effective, he said.

He said fuel prices had been hiked several fold after the UPA Government came to power. He said the Government should have reduced taxes on fuel to control price rise.

Mr. Pandhe said the support of the Left parties to the UPA Government was conditional and failure in implementing the CMP would result in serious repercussions. CPI (M) Alappuzha district secretary P. Sudhakaran presided. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran spoke.
