Government following UDF stand, says Mani

Staff Reporter

On self-financing colleges issue

THRISSUR: The former Revenue Minister and the Kerala Congress (Mani) leader K.M. Mani on Tuesday said that the statement of Education Minister M.A. Baby indicated that the Government was now upholding the position of the United Democratic Front (UDF) regime on the self-financing colleges issue.

Talking to mediapersons here, Mr. Mani said the UDF's position had been that 50 per cent of the seats in self-financing colleges should be filled by the students from the merit list and that they should be charged only the fees in the Government colleges.

The UDF had then proposed that the remaining 50 per cent could be filled by the managements and the fees for them could be fixed by the managements.

Mr. Baby also announced that the LDF Government would adhere to this 50:50 formula and thereby vindicating the UDF stand, Mr. Mani argued.

He said that even though the Supreme Court had only fixed the ratio of number of students in the merit and management quotas, the Minister was already insisting that the fees for the 50 per cent merit seats should be at the level prevailing in Government colleges.

Mr. Mani alleged that Government was trying to stifle private educational institutions by various measures like banning the appointments in aided educational institutions.
