Congress plans bandh

Condemns violent incident in Ujjain; also to observe relay hunger strike

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Congress unit president Subhash Yadav on Tuesday condemned the violent incident involving a group of students leading to the death of Professor H. S. Sabharwal at Ujjain's Madhav College this past Saturday and said that the Congress had decided to register a strong protest against the incident.

The State Government has ordered a magisterial probe and suspended the Ujjain city Superintendent of Police and two town inspectors.

Addressing media persons at the State Congress headquarters here, Mr. Yadav said the Ujjain incident was a blot on teacher-student relationship. He announced the Congress party's decision to hold a protest demonstration before the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan's bungalow between 12 noon and 3 p.m. on Wednesday and called for a State-wide bandh on September 5 coinciding with Teachers' Day.

From September 6 onward, they would be observing a relay hunger strike for a week, he said, adding that it was necessary for the people of Madhya Pradesh to know that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led State Government was taking the State "on the path of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as it had failed to control violence."

Lashing out at the State Government, Mr. Yadav said that those who had been released following the State Government's decision to withdraw over 70,000 criminal cases were now working for the ruling BJP. He said there was a complete breakdown of law and order and so many scams had been surfacing in the State.

Mr. Yadav demanded a CBI probe into the Ujjain incident and said the action taken against a few junior police officers was not enough and asserted that action also be taken against the Ujjain Collector and Superintendent of Police holding them responsible.

Prof Sabharwal died of injuries on Saturday after he was beaten and roughed up by students, allegedly belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, during the students' union election process. His death has sent shock waves through the teaching fraternity and the teaching staff in various colleges across the State has decided to protest by wearing black bands for the next few days.
