NEW DELHI: Fair price shop owners on Monday staged a rally at the Ramlila Grounds here demanding steps by the Union Government to strengthen the public distribution system in the country.

Earlier, addressing the rally, Communist Party of India general secretary A.B. Bardhan said that as long as there were poor in the country, the PDS should not be done away with, as it was the most effective way to ensure that they could buy essential items at a fair price.
He said every step should be taken to strengthen the system. Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury also extended full support to the cause.
