MYSORE: Work on six-laning of Mysore-Srirangapatna highway will commence on August 31 and is expected to cost Rs. 22 crore.
Increase in traffic density
The stretch along the existing Mysore-Bangalore highway is being taken up for widening given the increase in traffic density as one approaches the cities. Officials say the contract for road widening is in the process of being finalised and will be awarded shortly. The widening of the stretch between Mysore and Srirangapatna will be followed by construction of a bypass each at Mandya, Maddur, Channapatana and Ramanagaram which will obviate the need for the traffic to enter the township. This is expected to further curtail the travel time between Mysore and Bangalore. A flyover is also proposed at Mandya all of which will help cope with the perceived increase in the traffic density on the Bangalore-Mysore highway. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will dedicate the four-lane Bangalore-Mysore highway to the people and officials here said that barring an underpass at Channapatana, the entire project had been completed.
Relief to commuters
The highway, which has already been thrown open to traffic, is proving to be popular among commuters and the passenger volume is steadily increasing. When the road repair work was in progress, a majority of the commuters and tourists preferred the train given the time and cost advantage. Though the train journey continues to provide the cost advantage, the travel time is more or less equal but the bus offers better flexibility for passengers who can arrive at the bus stop any time and be assured of a service. KSRTC officials said nearly 12,000 passengers travel to Bangalore daily using the State Road Transport Corporation buses.
