MYSORE: The 25th National Nutrition Week will be celebrated in the city from September 1 by the Mysore Clinical Society in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture. The nutrition week is being observed since 1982 across the country to focus on the problem of malnutrition and this year's theme is "Nutrition and Literacy". According to Mysore Clinical Society, women and girl child are the worst sufferers of the various forms of malnutrition because of their increased nutritional needs and low social status. Statistics show that 55 per cent of women suffer from under nutrition or malnutrition and 52 per cent suffer from anaemia, and more than 50 per cent of women suffer from iodine deficiency. The reasons for malnutrition among women and girl child were attributed to gender discrimination, early marriage and early pregnancy. These factors aggravate the problem of malnutrition and anaemia adversely affecting the newborn, according to the society. Hence the National Nutrition Week will create public awareness on issues pertaining to the health of women and girl child. The programme will be inaugurated by V.Prakash, Director, Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI). Three special lectures by subject experts will be held for the benefit of public. C. Sharath Kumar will speak on "Nutrition Deficiency in Women", Indira Amla will speak on "Nutrition Deficiency in Children" while Prakash K Prabhu will speak on "Nutrition and Urinary Stones". A free osteoporosis detection camp will be held during the week. The inaugural programme will be held at Kalamandira on September 1 at 9 a.m.
