SPECIAL FIZZ: Jana Vignana Vedika activists using a portrait of Lord Ganesha as part of the campaign against carbonated drinks in Kurnool on Tuesday. Photo U. Subramanyam
KURNOOL: Jana Vignana Vedika, a social organisation campaigning against superstitions, invoked Lord Ganesh to educate public about the harmful effects of cool drinks here on Tuesday. The office-bearers installed 12-feet high portrait of Ganesh at the Collectorate. Ganesh in the poster had four hands-one offering tender coconut water, the other fresh fruit drink, the third, buttermilk and the fourth hand, water. The God is shown trampling upon the bottles of carbonated soft drinks. They tried to educate a small gathering that consumption of soft drinks caused obesity, brittle bones and loss of teeth enamel. They urged the Government to ban sale of colas in cinema theatres. Instead they suggested sale of packaged water. The campaigners commented on the irony of carbonated drinks being available in the remotest corners of a village while safe drinking water was elusive to a large chunk of the population.
