Krishna dismisses reports on comeback

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: The former Chief Minister and Maharashtra Governor, S.M. Krishna, on Tuesday refuted reports that he was planning to return to State politics, and said, "As far as I am concerned, it is a mere rumour and I don't want to react to speculative reports in this regard." Mr. Krishna, who was on his way to Holenarsipur to attend the 11th day ceremony of the senior Congress leader G. Puttaswamy Gowda, who died recently, spoke to presspersons here.

His reaction was similar when he was asked to comment on reports that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be inducting him into the Union Cabinet as External Affairs Minister.

He said he did not want to respond to hypothetical questions.

In response to a question on the Centre's affidavit filed in the Supreme Court in response to Maharashtra's petition seeking the transfer of Marathi-speaking areas such as Belgaum to that State, Mr. Krishna said his role as Governor was limited to addressing joint sessions of the legislature, and he was expected to act according to the Constitution.

It was not right on his part as Governor to react to issues beyond the scope of the Constitution.

He said he was in Mumbai when Mr. Puttaswamy Gowda died and he could not attend the funeral. The MP had been his senior colleague and he was going to Holenarsipur to pay tribute to him and console the family members, Mr. Krishna said.

Among those who attended Tuesday's ceremony were the Congress leaders D.K. Shivakumar, H. Vishwanath, H.M. Revanna, R.L. Jalappa, H.C. Srikantaiah, Rani Satish, V.S. Ugrappa, B. Shivaram, S.M. Anand, Arkalgud Manju, D. Mallesh, G.V. Siddappa and K.P. Prabhukumar.
