A.G. Kodgi to head Finance Commission

Bangalore: The Government has appointed A.G. Kodgi, former MLA from Udupi district and BJP leader, as chairman of the Third State Finance Commission. The two members of the commission are Mahendra S. Kanthi, economist, and T. Thimmegowda, a retired IAS officer.

Dr. Kanthi, who holds a doctorate in economics, is the son of the former Chief Minister S.R. Kanthi. He joined the BJP in 2004.

Mr. Thimmegowda held various positions, including Transport Commissioner and Managing Director, Cauvery Neeravari Nigam. — Special Correspondent

Yediyurappa to attend U.S. sammelan

Bangalore: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa will be leaving for the U.S. on Wednesday night to attend the international Kannada sammelan to be held in Maryland. It is being organised by AKKA (Association of Kannada Kootas of America).

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is unlikely to make the trip to the U.S.

Chief Minister to accompany Shivraj Patil

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa will be leaving for Bidar on Wednesday morning to accompany Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on his aerial survey of the flood-affected districts of Gulbarga, Raichur, Bijapur, Bagalkot and Belgaum.

NASSCOM meet on quality next month

Bangalore: NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Service Companies), the premier trade body and voice of the IT software and services industry, today announced that it would hold its annual Quality Summit here from September 5 to 7. Themed `Setting benchmarks in global outsourcing,' the summit will focus on addressing present and future quality requirements of the global outsourcing industry, NASSCOM vice-president Sangeeta Gupta said.

Reconstitution of minorities panel sought

Bangalore: Derrick Fullinfaw, general secretary of the Minority Morcha of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State unit, has criticised the State Minorities Commission for recommending that the minorities should stop depending on the Government for their welfare and development.

In a statement to the press, Mr. Fullinfaw, a former nominated MLA, said the commission did not deserve to exist after it made what he termed "such a ridiculous recommendation" in its `Vision 2025' document. It should have known that more than 80 per cent of the minorities were poor and deserved to be assisted by the Government.

The Government should constitute a new Commission, he said.

Boy's death creates tension

GULBARGA: Tension prevailed in Farhatabad following the death of a six-year-old boy in an accident on the Gulbarga-Bangalore State Highway near Farahatabad Cross on Tuesday evening and the angry crowd blocked the road in protest for two hours. The protesters demanded action against the driver and steps to prevent accidents. According to reports reaching here, the victim, Shivaraj Ashok Aihale, was run over by a lorry coming from Gulbarga and the victim died on the way to hospital. The driver of the lorry fled the spot, abandoning the vehicle. As the news about the accident spread, the people started gathering on the state highway. — Special Correspondent

DHARWAD: Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) has invited applications for the departmental examinations to be held in November/ December. The last date for submitting applications is September 25. Science drama

GULBARGA: The Gulbarga District Science Centre in collaboration with the office of the Deputy Director of Public Instruction would hold a district-level science drama competition for high school students of the Gulbarga Educational District on Wednesday. District Science Officer B.R. Vishwanath said here on Tuesday that the topics for drama competition were biodiversity and science and society. — Special Correspondent

Urs held

Bidar: The 589th Sandal and Urs-e-Shareef of the late King of Bidar, Sultan Ahmed Shah Bahmani was held at his tomb in Ashtur in Bidar taluk on Tuesday. Religious ceremonies such as Khatme Quran, Majlis Chiragan and Sandal Shareef were held. Sajjada Nasheen and Mutawalli Sultan Khaleel Shah Bahmani were present. Many Hindus and Muslims from surrounding villages visited this place on the occasion, said a release.

Jatra concludes

Bidar: The annual Jatra festival of Sri Madu Appa Devarsi of the Akhila Bharata Gowli Samaj Math in Chitaguppa concluded on Monday. A procession was taken out through the main streets of the city. Members of the milkman community from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Kerala participated in the procession in large numbers, said a release. — Staff Correspondent

Training

MYSORE: The University of Mysore will provide a three-month coaching for students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minorities, aspiring to write the National Eligibility Test conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Classes will commence on September 1. Classes for science subjects will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and for humanities stream from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Those interested should apply in the prescribed application form available from the Coordinator, UGC-CSIR [NET] Caching Centre, EMMRC, Manasagangotri, Mysore. Destroyed

MYSORE: A four-wheeler was gutted in an accidental fire near the Karnataka Police Academy on Monday night. There was no injury or loss of life as the occupants ran out soon after the fire broke out. The Lakshkar Police visited the spot and have registered a case. — Special Correspondent

DHARWAD: The Karnatak University, Dharwad, has on Tuesday announced the results of M.C.A fourth semester examinations held during April and May 2006, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

Programme cancelled

PANAJI: Goa University's Study India Programme (SIP) in tie-up with Nihon University of Japan is off this year on account of four of the eight Japanese students enrolled for the programme opting out. Sources in Goa University said that a e-mail reportedly sent by the students and their parents have cited growing terrorism in India as the reason for their decision.

Under the SIP, the Goa University has entered into an understanding with the Nihon University to allow Japanese students to visit Goa and spend one semester from September to March here.

Goa University officials said that the programme for 2007 was on. The university was planning to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with a U.S. and a German university for SIP, they added. — Special Correspondent
