Package for ryots not enough: MP

Staff Reporter

Call to implement Jayati Ghosh Commission's recommendations

  • Suravaram vows to oppose uranium plant near Devarakonda
  • Accuses district police of harassing surrendered naxalites

NALGONDA: The Rs. 16,000-crore package proposed by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy is not enough to bail out farmers from the agrarian crisis, Nalgonda MP Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy has observed.

Welcoming the components of the package at a press conference at the CPI office on Tuesday, he said: "We are not rejecting the package, but we strongly feel that it is only going to solve the problem partially. If you wish to solve the agricultural crisis, you must implement the Jayati Ghosh Commission's report as it is."

    Irregularities

He said the Union Home Minister had agreed to revive the committee to correct irregularities in granting pensions for those who had taken part in the Telangana peasants' armed struggle.

Reiterating the party's stand on the proposed uranium project near Devarakonda, the MP said his party would confront the Government, if it went ahead with its plans to set up mining and processing units in the district. "In reply to my letter, the Minister for Environment and Forest had said that the Government was in favour of the project to meet the demand for uranium. However, we are not going to buy the argument since it would affect the environment and people," he said adding that his party would take the help of other parties to fight the move.

    Complaints against police

The MP alleged that the district police had been harassing former militants and surrendered naxalites following the Maoists' attack on Atmakur (M) police station.

"I am receiving a plethora of complaints alleging that the police are harassing those who joined the mainstream. We should not resort to harassing innocent persons as in the past," he observed.
