  • Commissioner due to appear before High Court on Thursday
  • Court had rapped the civic body for failing to check illegal constructions

NEW DELHI: With Municipal Commissioner A. K. Nigam due to appear before the Delhi High Court this Thursday in connection with unauthorised and illegal constructions across the city, squads of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday stepped up action against ongoing illegal construction work targeting around 100 properties in different parts of the Capital.

In Rohini Zone, the civic body's squads sealed 46 properties, residential as well as commercial, in which illegal construction was allegedly going on. The action was carried out at Rohini, Ashok Vihar, Tri Nagar, Kanhaiya Nagar and Raj Nagar. At the last court hearing on the matter, the MCD had been rapped for failing to check unauthorised constructions in the zone despite the court commissioner's report and the court had ordered transfer of the zone's Deputy Commissioner G. S. Matharoo for the lapse.

On Tuesday, MCD teams along with members of its newly constituted task force also carried out drives in the Central Zone sealing at least 30 properties at Greater Kailash II, Chittaranjan Park, Harkesh Nagar, Tughlakhabad Extension, Kotla Mubarakpur, Bhogal and Siri Fort Road. They not only sealed properties where illegal construction was allegedly going on, but also removed encroachments from public land, roadside and parks in the zone.

In Karol Bagh Zone, demolition was carried out at over half-a-dozen properties on Rama Road, while 10 commercial properties were sealed in DSIDC Industrial Area at Bawana in Narela Zone.

The demolition and sealing drive was also carried out in Shahdara (South) Zone. Encroachments on public land and constructions done in violation of building by-laws were removed in Laxmi Nagar, Vikas Marg and New Rajdhani Enclave.

The civic body also removed encroachments in Civil Lines Zone. Its squads not only removed encroachments on Magazine Road near Majnu Ka Tila but also demolished illegal structures on the stretch between Indira Nagar and Majlis Park.

On Monday also the MCD squads had carried out sealing and demolition action in various parts of the city targeting more than 100 properties including farmhouses, residential and commercial properties.
