Plan to connect village health centres to hospitals

Staff Reporter

When ready, the National Telemedicine Grid will make possible large-scale surveillance of diseases across the country

NEW DELHI: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is working at inter-connecting the remotest village health care centres with the top-notch medical facilities in the country thus making quality health care consultations and education not constrained to the limits of distance and time.

When ready, the National Telemedicine Grid will make possible, among others things, large-scale surveillance of diseases and dissemination of health education and provide health system information across the country.

"It's an ambitious plan to interconnect all major hospitals in the country to health care facilities in villages, districts and hospitals in various States. At present a technical sub-group and task force have been constituted and committees have been set up to look into the guidelines and standards for the operation that promises to change the face of health care services and education across the country," says Antrix Corporation Limited's Director (Business Development) L. S. Sathyamurthy.

He was here in the Capital last week to take part in the Global Convention and Expo on Telemedicine and e-Health.

"By establishing the grid we will be able to offer not just continuing medical education to doctors in far-flung area of the country but also initiate pilot projects covering primary health care centres specially concentrating on women and child care," said Mr. Sathyamurthy.

The network when set up will also string together individual systems operating in States.

"The system is aimed at offering better and easily accessible health care facilities. It will offer hybrid connectivity across," added B. S. Bhatia of ISRO Development and Educational Communication Unit.
