NEW DELHI: Members of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) mimicked packages of frozen meat on Tuesday outside the International Livestock and Dairy Expo at Pragati Maidan here by lying on large trays covered with clear plastic to protest against the "meat trade".

Protesting members holding signs "Meat is Murder" also went about distributing leaflets. Through this protest PETA aimed at demonstrating the pain of billion of animals that are abused and violently killed for people who eat meat.

    N. G. Jayasimha, India Coordinator (Campaigns) of PETA, said: "We are challenging people to really think about what meat is. Eating flesh means eating the corpse of a tortured animal who did not want to die. We are encouraging kind consumers to give vegetarianism a try."

The group also highlighted the fact that animals slaughtered for meat are crammed into vehicles in such large numbers that many become severely injured or die en route.

Animals are hit, dragged and cruelly and illegally handled and often not provided with even basic necessities such as food, water and veterinary treatment. At the slaughterhouse, they are killed in view of one another and are often dismembered and skinned while they are still conscious.

Meanwhile, International Livestock and Dairy Expo event organiser Vishal Gupta said: "This expo is purely educational and technology-based and packaged and processed meat is a very small part of the exhibition. What is more important and relevant are dairy products and processing equipments and farm equipment."
