"Illicit liquor trade checked"

NEW DELHI: Delhi Finance Minister A.K. Walia claims that the drive against illicit liquor trade in the Capital by the Enforcement and Intelligence Bureau has brought forth fruitful results.

Speaking at a function here on Monday, Dr. Walia said there has been an increase of 4 per cent -- from 84 per cent to 88 per cent -- in the number of cases detected, persons arrested and Indian Made Foreign Liquor bottles seized during April and mid-August this year compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Canara Bank opens new branch

NEW DELHI: Canara Bank opened its 121st branch of the Delhi circle at Dwarka Sector 12 here on Tuesday. It was inaugurated by Special Secretary (Financial Sector) Banking and Insurance Division in the Union Ministry of Finance, Vinod Rai. Among those present on the occasion were Canara Bank Chairman and Managing Director M.B.N. Rao and General Manager Delhi Circle T.Y. Prabhu.

Established in 1906, Canara Bank completed 100 years of service on June 30 this year.

Counselling centre inaugurated

NEW DELHI: Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri inaugurated a counselling centre named "Operation Talent" at South Extension Part-II here on Monday. Set up by Samvedna, the new centre will deal with children's problems like stress, tension, anxiety and frustration and help them to overcome them.

Teachers' Day celebrations

NEW DELHI: Honouring the most important people in the schools -- teachers -- Bharat Vikas Parishad will organise a Teachers' Day celebration at Virendra Public School on September 5. Students along with the staff members will participate in this event.

The four participating schools are Jyoti Model School, Adarsh Nagar; New Shalimar Public School, Shalimar Bagh; Virendra Public School, Timarpur; and Joseph Mary Public School, Burari.

Life sentence for two in murder case

NEW DELHI: Relying on the dying declaration of a man, a City Court on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to his wife and brother-in-law for burning him to death. Holding that there was no contradiction in the statement made by the victim before his death, Additional Sessions Judge S K Kaushik said the prosecution has established its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Acquitted

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High court on Tuesday acquitted a murder accused, who was awarded death sentence and two persons facing life imprisonment, setting aside the order of trial court in a triple murder case. The Division bench headed by Justice RS Sodhi and PK Bhasin observed that the trial court order had more imagination than facts.
