Arrangements for Vinayaka Chaturthi rallies

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI : The city police have made elaborate arrangements for the Vinayaka Chaturthi processions to be taken out on September 2 and 3, said Additional DGP (law and order) and Commissioner of Police (in-charge) K. V. S. Murthy here on Monday.

As many as 1,000 idols of different sizes are expected to be taken out in 30 different processions.

Already immersion of Vinayaka idols is on, but a majority of devotees are expected to participate in the September 2 and 3 rallies, he said.

The State Government, on August 13, notified six places — Srinivasapuram at Foreshore Estate, near Fishing Harbour at Kasimedu, Popular Weigh Bridge, and Universal Carborandum at Thiruvottriyur, Palgalai Nagar at Neelangarai and Ramakrishna Nagar at Ennore — for immersion of idols.

Apart from deploying adequate policemen and officers for the procession, the police from anti-sabotage wing would be posted at vantage points.

Surveillance

Similarly, plainclothesmen trained to check eve-teasers and chain-snatchers would be closely monitoring the movements of the crowd. A special team would also guard against any short-circuits en route, he noted.

Along with officials, members of the idol protection committee, comprising 20 members, would ensure that nothing untoward happened during the procession. Special pickets would be there at all points and he expected the celebration to pass off peacefully.
