Conservancy workers withdraw strike
Staff Reporter
TAMBARAM
: Conservancy workers of Pallavaram Municipality withdrew their strike on Tuesday afternoon, following discussions held by their leaders with the Municipal Commissioner. The workers submitted a memorandum to him urging him to withdraw the move to privatise garbage collection.
During the discussions, it was decided to refer the issue to the Municipal Council as the privatisation decision was taken with the council's assent.
According to municipal officials, the subject would be discussed at the council meeting scheduled for September 1. The privatisation move would be put on cold storage till that time.
On an assurance from the officials, workers resumed work in the afternoon. Owing to the strike many areas of the municipal limits were left with mounds of garbage.
It may take at least a couple of days to clear them, an activist from Hasthinapuram said.
