CHENNAI : Porur has finally qualified for an underground drainage scheme after its status has been reverted to town panchayat from the special village panchayat. Now that it is eligible for loans from the Tamilnadu Urban Finance Infrastructure Development Corporation, which were previously available only to municipalities, it was listed with urban local bodies in the Local Body Administration Minister's announcement in the Assembly recently. The TUFIDCO is a nodal agency channellising funds from other agencies for urban infrastructure development. Residents' wait for the facility, however, will be extended by a few months because local body elections are round the corner. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board would soon begin preparation of detailed project reports for the scheme's implementation in Porur, Maduravoyal, Kathivakkam and Madhavaram. Tenders are expected to be called for after the local body elections likely to be held in a month or two. Other local bodies, which will benefit from the announcement, include Pallavaram Municipality where work is expected to be completed by August, 2007. Under Phase-II of the UGD in Ambattur Municipality this year, Metrowater would construct a terminal sewage pumping station and lay a pipeline to convey sewage to Koyambedu Sewage Treatment Plant at an estimated cost of Rs.7.50 crore. The phase-III would provide the sewerage system for the left-out portions of Ambattur Municipality.
