Sonia Gandhi to attend TNCC regional workers conference at Gobichettipalayam

ERODE: Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan on Tuesday defended Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in the reservation issue.

Reacting to the statement made against Mr. Chidambaram by PMK founder S. Ramadoss, he said: "I know Mr. Chidambaram for the past 40 years. His economic policy may be criticised, but his credibility and support for the backward classes cannot be criticised."

Mr. Elangovan told The Hindu here that the TNCC Regional Workers Conference would be conducted in the third week of September at Gobichettiplayam. Congress president Sonia Gandhi would address the meet.

He said the Railway Ministry approved the Sathyamangalam-Samrajnagar track work.

The scheme would be executed at a cost of Rs. 200 crore.

On the representation made by the Tribal People (Malayalis) Association to include them in the ST category, Mr. Elangovan said he had made a request to the Union Tribal Welfare Minister.
