TIRUCHI: About 200 micro enterprises would be promoted in the Tiruchi region by the Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (TIDITSSIA) in the next four years under a Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development (STED) project funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board of the DST has sanctioned Rs.38 lakh to the TIDITSSIA to identify the projects and prospective entrepreneurs, provide necessary training and guide them right through their ventures. All the projects will be in the manufacturing sector. The TIDITSSIA had identified six core areas garment manufacturing, food processing, imitation jewellery (synthetic diamond polishing), finished leather products, business process outsourcing and mechanical products for promoting the micro enterprises, the TIDITSSIA president, S. Sridharan, said. The first venture, a garment manufacturing unit floated as a partnership venture by five first generation women entrepreneurs at Karumandapam in Tiruchi, is to go on stream shortly. The unit, with about 50 modern sewing machines, would take up job works for a Karur-based handloom made-up goods manufacturer. A nationalised bank had, in principle, agreed to advance credit, M. Pushpareka, team leader of the project, said. Twenty other projects and entrepreneurs have been identified in the city under the sector. The projects would come up at Tiruvanaikovil, Palakkarai, Tiruverambur, Woraiyur and Subramaniapuram and were in the final stages of assessment and sanction by various banks, S.Abdul Rasheed, Secretary, TIDITSSIA said. While garment manufacturing will be exclusive for women, projects in other sectors will be for men. Food processing would be the other sector to be promoted this year and the association had identified the products and was working on finalising the marketing tie-ups, C.Ramaswamy Desai, Project Director, TIDITSSIA-STED, said.
