Multi-purpose dredge utility craft launched

It can be used for dredging waterways and drainages

MULTI-PURPOSE EXCAVATOR: The dredge utility craft which was launched on Tuesday.

KOCHI: Dredge Utility Craft, a state-of-the-art excavator, was launched here on Tuesday by K.N. Satheesh, Managing Director, Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Satheesh said that the machine would be very effective in dredging the national waterways and other water bodies. "It can also be used for urban waste management, which has become a big problem for policymakers. Another problem facing Indian cities is the management of drainage systems. Agencies dealing with the problem can deploy such machines to effectively manage waste and to dredge waterways, to make them navigable," he said.

The craft was developed by the India Techs Limited, a public-limited company based in the State.

Speaking on the occasion, George Vinci Thomas, Managing Director of the company, said clogged drains cause water logging, even during normal times. "Rain, even moderate spells, can severely test the infrastructure of cities, bringing life to a grinding halt. The problem plagues all cities and major towns of the country. This year too Mumbai demonstrated to the world that we steadfastly refuse to learn lessons from history," he said.

The waterways were blocked because of inadequate cleaning. The accumulation of waste in the sewage impedes the flow of water and provides a breeding ground for disease-causing germs and insects. The dredge utility craft offers a solution to all these problems.
