PVR Cinemas: State seeks time to file affidavit

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The State Government on Tuesday sought a week's time from the Karnataka High Court for filing an affidavit by the Principal Secretary of the Department of Home and Transport, verifying if the State has passed any order under Section 12 (C) of the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulations) Act, 1964.

The Additional Government Advocate sought time in a case where PVR Cinemas in Koramangala had challenged a direction by the authorities to stop screening of films as it had violated some provisions of the Cinematography Act.

When the court was informed that the licence granted to PVR would expire on August 31, 2006, a Division Bench comprising Justice Gopal Gowda and Justice C.R. Kumarswamy said it was just and proper to give liberty to the appellant to file an application under the rules for seeking temporary licence. The Bench said such an application should be disposed of as expeditiously as possible but not later than August 31. If it was not disposed of within that time, then the interim order of stay on the Government direction asking PVR not to screen films would be in operation in favour of the appellant.
