BANGALORE: The State Government has decided to defer enforcing the rule making wearing of helmets compulsory for riders of two-wheelers in Bangalore and other major towns by one month. The rule was to be enforced from September 1. Owing to the reported inconvenience it may cause to the pillion riders, the Government has taken the step. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy told reporters that the Government would seek clearance from the Karnataka High Court to exempt pillion riders from wearing helmets. The rule was being implemented following a directive by the High Court. The Government would wait till the High Court decided on its plea to enforce the rule. The city police had said that as the notification did not exempt pillion riders from wearing helmets, the police would be duty-bound to enforce the same without any discretion if the rule comes in to effect from September 1. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M.N. Reddi told The Hindu that the police would wait till the Government came out with a formal order. There would not be any haste to implement the rule from September 1, he said.
