Where Dalits could not be elected for a minimum of two tenures

MADURAI: The State Government should promulgate an ordinance for continuing with the reservation in local bodies wherever Dalit representatives were not allowed to be elected for a minimum of two tenures, said leader of Dalit Panthers of India Thol. Tirumavalavan. has demanded.

He welcomed the Government's decision not to de-reserve the four panchayats — Pappapatti, Keeripatti, Nattarmangalam and Kottakatchiyendal. Stating that the DPI would field candidates in all these four reserved panchayats, he appealed to all political parties to support them.

Mr. Tirumavalavan also welcomed the concept of allowing political parties to directly field their candidates at the panchayat level.

The party opposed the State Government's ordinance favouring indirect election to the posts of Corporation Mayor and Municipal Chairman. Allowing the councillors to elect the Mayor and Chairman instead of the voters would lead to corruption and horse-trading.

"Increase reserved seats"

Stating that the Dalit population in the State had increased by one per cent to 19 per cent as per 2001-census, Mr. Tirumavalavan wanted the Government to increase the reserved seats accordingly. The party would stage a demonstration at all taluks on September 6, pressing for increase in reservation of seats. The concept of creamy layer should be withdrawn in providing 27 per cent reservation for the Other Backward Classes.
