Straight from nature

The IRDP exhibition on at the Ernakulathappan grounds has on display products of everyday use manufactured by Kudumbasree units.

The products are made using natural methods. Be it food products, handicrafts or curios, the sense of reliability attached to them draws consumers.

Many products are known by the regions they come from. These include Marayur jaggery, Munnar tea and Santhanpara spices.

Some products such as bottled fruit juices can vie with those marketed by multinationals. Several novel products such as pickles made from spices and papad prepared from tapioca are available.

Toilet soap, honey, knives, handicrafts and fresh agricultural produce are also on display.

Some stalls have tried to draw the attention of the customers by highlighting special characteristics of the products.

For instance, attempts are made to popularise seeds of jackfruit by terming them `natural glucose' and the `kanthari' variety of chilli as a `cholesterol stopper.'
