Farmers' union seeks bank loan waiver

Special Correspondent

Pondicherry: The Pondicherry Farmers' Union has called upon the nationalised banks to waive loans taken by farmers under different agricultural schemes. The Secretary of the union, T. Geethanathan, said here in a release on Wednesday that the general council of the union at its meeting adopted a resolution that it would make a plea to the Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on September 1.

The other pleas of the Union were: free power supply to farmers and free insurance cover for all livestock in the Union Territory of Pondicherry.

Their demands also included the take over of the New Horizon Sugar Mills (which is now defunct) at Ariyur near Pondicherry, farm inputs as well as seeds for farmers to enable them to carry on their farm operations and immediate distribution of subsidies to dairy farmers to purchase cattle feed.
