WELL BEGUN: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy watching the drilling work that marked the inauguration of the Government Medical College construction at Kadirkamam on Wednesday.
PONDICHERRY: The construction work for the first Government Medical College in the Union Territory began in earnest on Wednesday at Kadirkamam. The project, estimated at Rs. 234 crore, comes up in an area of 40 acres and expected to be completed by the end of next year. The main two blocks, one for the 750-beddded hospital and the other for the college, will have ground plus four floors. The college will have facility to admit 150 students per year. Separate hostels for girls and boys will also come up at the premises. The hospital site will have residential quarters for nurses, lecturers, additional professors and professors. There will also be individual houses for the Director, Dean and Medical Superintendent. An auditorium with a total built-up area of 1,680 square metres is also being planned. The other facilitates at the site include a swimming pool, cricket stadium and an open-air theatre. There is also a provision for constructing overhead tank and an under ground sump that can hold five-lakh liters for supplying drinking water. The Chief Minister N. Rangasamy attended the bhoomi pooja, which was performed on Wednesday.
