Increase minimum support price for red gram, say farmers

Special Correspondent

Farmers' groups stage rail roko

GULBARGA: Farmers owing allegiance to different organisations, including the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (Puttannaiah), Red Gram Growers Association, Raitha Margadharshi Kendra and the District Krishik Samaj, staged a rail roko agitation in the Gulbarga Railway Station on Wednesday.

The farmers, who came in a procession to the railway station, squatted on the tracks for nearly 15 minutes raising slogans against the Union Government demanding remunerative price for the agriculture produce and compensation to farmers who lost their crops in the floods and drought in the State.

Memorandum

Later in a memorandum addressed to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, they said the farming community continued to be the most neglected and exploited community.

Farmers demanded remunerative prices for all agriculture produce and the Government should increase the minimum support price for all commodities to a reasonable level. The minimum support price of red gram should be increased to a minimum of Rs. 2,500 per quintal, they said.

Compensation

The memorandum said farmers in the State had burnt their fingers owing to failure of rain in most parts of the State and floods in the Krishna, Ghataprabha, Tungabhadra and the Bhima. The Government should compensate the farmers, they said.

They also demanded immediate lifting of the ban imposed on the export of red gram as it was detrimental to the interests of growers.
