Electronic database for manuscripts created

Special Correspondent

Thanjavur: The National Mission for Manuscripts under the Union Ministry of Culture has created an electronic database for one million manuscripts in India, according to Yashaswini Chandra and Kakul Fatima, Assistant Co-ordinators (Publications), National Mission for Manuscripts.

They were here to participate in a seminar on exploring manuscript traditions of Indian architecture with special emphasis on South India organised by the Mission. The database will soon be released.

The Mission has estimated that there are five million manuscripts in India. The collection is said to be the largest in the world. India's manuscripts are varied in theme, literary content, aesthetic elements and intellectual interests. The immense range of languages and scripts in which manuscripts are found reflects vibrant linguistic and literary traditions over thousands of years.

The Mission has a five-year project not merely to locate, catalogue and preserve India's manuscripts but also to enhance access, spread awareness and encourage research.

The Mission is creating a digital resource of vital caches . At the end of its tenure, a National Manuscripts Library will be established with digital resources.
