Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited is planning to make a major investment of Rs. 1,600 crore in a bid to meet the country's power capacity addition targets by 2012. Describing it as "holistic modernisation'' and capacity expansion of its facilities, the company says the focus of the initiative is on adding facilities for manufacturing units and for erection and commissioning services at customer project sites.

Capacity expansion

A company release says based on the Eleventh Plan projections for capacity addition, including of nuclear power stations, BHEL would like to enhance capacity even beyond 10,000 MW. These programmes are in the nature of brownfield expansion adding mainly work centre capacities. "BHEL has large accumulated reserves and surplus, in addition to its leveraging capacity to raise resources from the market , and can fully meet the resource requirements on its own,'' it states.

The company has also taken necessary steps for upgradation and introduction of new technologies. It has already tied up to acquire new technology to produce thermal power equipment with super-critical parameters for the next higher rating of 800 MW sets and above.
