Subba Rao remembered

HYDERABAD: Veteran sports journalist, Eka Venkata Subba Rao, who passed away recently, was remembered at a condolence meeting organised at AP Olympic Bhavan here on Wednesday.

L.V. Subrahmanyam, IAS and former SAAP VC & MD, recalled the yeoman service of the late scribe when the times were really tough for the fourth estate. "It was amazing how a single individual's pursuit despite adversity gave sports journalism a new identity in the State to be followed so diligently now by his students," he remarked.

"From whatever little interaction I had with him recently, I thought it would be good if L. Venkatram Reddy (Secretary of APOA) sets up a sports library as a token of appreciation for the contribution of Eka Subba Rao, who hailed from Guntur," he appealed.

Committed professional

"We will miss this committed professional who also authored many books portraying not just the success stories of AP sportspersons but also critical analyses of various relevant issues during his 50-year career as a sports journalist," Mr. Subrahmanyam said.

P.R. Mohan, former SAAP Chairman who organised the function, hoped that Eka Subba Rao's commitment and sincerity would inspire a new generation and help Andhra produce more knowledgeable scribes and sportspersons.

L.Venkatram Reddy and J. Srinivas, Sports Editor of Vaartha, remarked that Eka Subba Rao was like a mobile library and was always frank in pointing out mistakes in the sports pages. Krishna Rao, Sports Editor of Andhra Jyothi, D. Ravi, Deputy Director of SAAP, and former national athletic champion Rami Reddy also recalled the contributions of Eka Subba Rao. — Principal Correspondent
