ALAPPUZHA : The failure on the part of the Government to appoint chairmen to the various workers' welfare fund boards in the State has crippled its functioning, Revolutionary Socialist Party (Marxist) State secretary P. Mohanan Pillai has said. At a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Pillai, who was the former chairman of Motor Workers' Welfare Fund Board, said the chairmen appointed by the previous UDF Government tendered their resignations after the Assembly elections. The new Government could not appoint new chairmen even 100 days after it assumed office. He said the groupism in the CPI(M) was delaying the appointment of chairmen. He said the Motor Workers' Welfare Fund Board's functioning was affected for the last five months following a High Court stay and the State Government was doing nothing to get the stay vacated. Mr. Pillai said there were allegations of large-scale malpractices and corruption in the Construction Workers' Welfare Fund Board during the term of P. Sankaradas. The RSP(M) initiated a party-level inquiry against Mr. Sankardas following the allegations. Following this, Mr. Sankardas resigned from the RSP(M) and joined the CPI, he said. The CPI's stand in the issue exposed its sincerity in opposing corruption, he said.
