ALAPPUZHA: The district administration and the Alappuzha District Tourism Promotion Council will jointly organise cultural programmes in the town during Onam. The celebrations are planned under the aegis of the Tourism Department from August 31 to September 4, Collector K.R. Muraleedharan said on Wednesday. He said that K.C. Venugopal, MLA, would inaugurate the celebrations at a function near the Raja Kesavadas Swimming Pool on August 31 at 5 p.m. Municipal chairman P.P. Chitharanjan would preside. Those who would offer felicitation include municipal vice-chairman Elgin Richard and Opposition leader in the municipal council A.A. Shukkoor. A music night `Devaraja Sandhya' would be held at 6 p.m. A `pookkalam' competition would be held at Jawahar Balabhavan at 10 a.m. on September 1. A tug-of-war competition would be held on the Alappuzha beach the same day at 5 p.m. A Tiruvathirakali competition would be held at Jawahar Balabhavan on September 2 at 4 p.m. A dance festival would be held on the Alappuzha beach at 5 p.m. on September 3, which would be followed by a ganamela at 7 p.m. The valedictory function of the celebrations would be held on the Alappuzha beach on September 4 at 5.30 p.m.
