Centre taking impartial view on border row, Karnataka told

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has promised that no injustice will be done to Karnataka vis-à-vis the border dispute with Maharashtra, Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan has said.

He told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the Centre was taking an impartial view with regard to the dispute.

Mr. Rajasekharan said there was nothing wrong in Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil joining a delegation from Maharashtra to meet the Prime Minister on the border issue.

Mr. Patil, incidentally, belongs to Maharashtra. It was natural that Ministers or leaders, irrespective of their official positions, represent their State to protect its interests. Even he had joined delegations from Karnataka on various issues, he said.

On the criticism that the Centre's affidavit in the Supreme Court in response to Maharashtra's suit was weak as the apex court might condone the element of "delay" under Section 5 of the Limitation Act, he said it was not proper for him to comment on the topic at this moment.

Legal experts from Karnataka should look into the matter, he said.
