KOLKATA: The core group of management institutions has proposed to the Veerappa Moily Oversight Committee a phased implementation, to be spread over the next three or four years, of the Centre's move for 27 per cent reservation of seats for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The proposal was made to the committee earlier this month, acting Director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta, Asim Pal, told The Hindu here on Wednesday. The core group of management institutions has representations from all six IIMs in the country as well as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai. While the IIM, Calcutta and most of the other IIMs have suggested that the proposed reservation programme be spread over the next three years there are some institutes, which have sought a four-year period to phase out its implementation, Prof. Pal added. The core group has also emphasised the requirement of additional funds for infrastructure development at the institutes as well as for some degree of autonomy to the IIMs for a phased recruitment of faculty members. A response to the proposals is expected soon, he said. A more "aggressive search" might be needed to attract prospective faculty members with added incentives like an attractive package and remuneration, accompanied by a relaxation in conditions. "The faculty-student ratio in IIM, Calcutta is presently 1:7.6 which we would like to see is brought to 1:7," he said.
