Student killed in wall collapse

NALGONDA: A student of a private school died and five others were injured when the parapet wall of the school building collapsed at Siripuram village of Ramannapet mandal on Wednesday. According to the police, the wall collapsed when students of Netaji School were watching the procession of Ganesh idols in the village. A case has been booked against the school management and the owner of the building. - Staff Reporter

Girl falls into pit, dies

NALGONDA: An eight-year-old girl, Shabana, was drowned in a pit dug up a year-and-a-half ago to construct foundation for the District Congress Committee office building at Prakasam Bazaar late on Tuesday. Goods train derails

NELLORE: Rail traffic was disrupted for around three hours on Wednesday after a goods train derailed near Bitragunta railway station. "Trains running from Vijayawada to Chennai were late because of the derailment of the train coming from Singarayakonda to Tondiarpet of Tamil Nadu," said a senior railway official. Rythu Sangham meet

HYDERABAD: The roundtable on drought organised by Rythu Sangham on Wednesday demanded permanent relief measures, besides short-term steps, and decided to exert apolitical pressure on the Government for initiating necessary action. Call to scrap G.O.

HYDERABAD: The AITUC State Council has demanded scrapping of G.O. 47 because of which seven lakh beedi workers in the State are getting Rs. 11 less than the Rs. 66 for every 1,000 beedis rolled recommended by the Beedi Welfare Development Board. - Special Correspondent

YSR to halt at Nandyal

KURNOOL: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will make a transit halt at Nandyal on Thursday for refuelling on his way to Kadapa and Nellore by helicopter. Collector M. Dana Kishore and SP B. Biography released

HYDERABAD: Assembly Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy on Tuesday released a biography of first Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly Ayyadevara Kaleswara Rao titled `Navyandhra - Na Jeeevithakatha.' Brothers hacked to death

KADAPA: Two brothers, Tirumala Chakrapani (30) and T. Hari (26), were murdered in Railway Kodur Harijanawada late on Tuesday night. The deceased were sons of a retired police constable T. Panchalaiah. Some persons led by relatives of the brothers -- Chiranjeevi and Murali -- had earlier abused the kin of the Chakrapani and Hari. On being informed of it the two picked up a row with the accused, who allegedly hacked Chankrapani and Hari to death. - Staff Reporter

Lineman electrocuted

Sangareddy: Lineman Anand Kumar (32) resident of Gajwel town was electrocuted on Wednesday in Srirampur village of Mulugu mandal while installing a transformer. According to the police Anand Kumar was fitting the transformer that came back from repair, when the accident occurred. - Staff Reporter

Engineer's eyes donated

KARIMNAGAR: Family members of executive engineer of SCCL, Godavarikhani, A. Raghuram Reddy (39), who died in a road accident near Sadasivapalli village of Manakondur mandal on Wednesday morning, donated his eyes to the Lions eye hospital, Rekurthi. The Lions eye hospital doctors shifted them to L.V. Prasad Eye Hospital, Hyderabad for donating it to the needy persons. - Staff Reporter

Gold stolen

Sangareddy: A jewellery shop owner in Toopran was relieved of 15 tolas of gold ornaments on Wednesday. According to the police, two men who posed as a police constable and branch manager of a public sector bank came to buy rings at Bhavani Jewellery shop. HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau officials arrested Thimmapuram Noor Basha, the Secretary of Peddoddi village panchayat in Gooti mandal of Anantapur district on Wednesday on charge of receiving Rs. 800 bribe from a person for issuing pattadar passbook, according to a press release. He would be produced before a special court at Hyderabad.

Protest against move to close RTC depot

Madanapalle : Students staged a demonstration at Jyothi Chowk on Tuesday protesting against the move to close down the APSRTC depot at B. Kothakota on the Karnataka-Andhra border. A bandh was also observed which passed off peacefully. Buses from here operate to eight mandals and even to some places in Karnataka. TDP leaders -- Kanchi Reddeppa, K. Siviah, Kanakanti Ramachandra, MPP, Kudumu Sreeramulu, sarpanch, and others enforced the bandh.— Correspondent

Remote area development reviewed

KURNOOL: Collector M. Dana Kishore reviewed the remote area development in the district here on Wednesday. Officials of important departments attended the meeting. Under Indiramma programme, 95 remote villages were sanctioned basic infrastructure like classrooms, drinking water and roads. Out of 37 villages, 30 were electrified except a few tribal hamlets. In 25 villages, 476 houses were constructed and another 474 are under construction. Roads were also being laid under various schemes. The Collector asked the officials to complete the works earlier without delay. - Staff Reporter

Power shutdown

ELURU: There will be no power supply in some parts of West Godavari district on Thursday and Friday to facilitate feeder repair works, according to Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (EPDCL) Divisional Electrical Engineer K.S.N. Murthy.

G. Kothapalli, Ch. Pothepalli, Eluru and Tallapudi will have no power supply from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. due to repairs in the 11KV sub-stations at G. Kothjapalli, Ch. Pothepalli and Eluru rural. - Staff Reporter

Panel on pension

GUNTUR: The Government has constituted a committee to look into the issue of freedom fighters who had filed a case in the High Court seeking revival of freedom fighters' pension under the State scheme.

According to District Collector G. Jayalakshmi, the committee, constituted on August 2, will discuss the issue with them in the chambers of Deputy Secretary, revenue, in the 6th Floor of `L' Block of Secretariat in Hyderabad from September 11 to 14 between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. - Staff Reporter

Jailed for rash driving

ELURU: Second Additional First Class Magistrate K. Hanumantha Rao on Wednesday sentenced Akula Muralikrishna of Tanuku to undergo one-year imprisonment for his rash and negligent driving leading to the death of a person.

According to the prosecution, an unidentified person was killed due to the negligent driving by the convict near Bhimadole in 1986. - Staff Reporter

MoU signed

VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra University became the first Indian university to sign a MoU with Blekinge Institute of Technology of Sweden. AU Registrar P. Vijaya Prakash and Chief Dean of the Swedish institute Jan Olof-Gustavsson signed the MoU in the presence of Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy at AU College of Engineering here on Wednesday.

The MoU will cover the masters students exchange between the two institutions and other programmes.

TTD digital library soon

Rajahmundry : The Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam (TTD) has taken a preliminary decision to establish a digital library in Rajahmundry to preserve archives of East and West Godavari districts. Mr. B.S. Kakinada : Students of V.S. Lakshmi Women's degree and PG College bagged the top two prizes besides the rolling shield in the essay writing and elocution contests organised by the Chitturi Indraiah memorial Government Degree College, Tanuku, in connection with Mathru Bhasha Dinotsav on August 29, according to V.Sandhya Principal. R. Assistance for accident victims

Kakinada : Union Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallamraju on Wednesday visited G. Mamidada village and called on families of those killed in the auto-lorry collision and assured them assistance under Government schemes. Five persons were killed in the mishap. While families of one of them will get the financial assistance under Apadbandhu, the other four families will be extended assistance under other schemes by Collector. E. Baburao. . — Correspondent

Two killed in road accidents

Kakinada : Two persons were killed and three others injured in two separate road accidents on Wednesday. In the first case, Koyya Venkayamma (50) was killed on the spot and three others farm workers injured when the auto in which they were travelling from Pathakothuru village to Pithapuram lost control and collided with another auto near Chandurti junction under Gollaprolu police station limits. In the second instance Mulleti Kasi (24) a cyclist was knocked down fatally on the outskirts of Vadlamuru along Peddapuram-Vadlamuru road under Peddapuram police station limits. — Correspondent

Training for youth

VIZIANAGARAM : In order to create employment opportunities, SETVIZ will impart training to youth in skill development, fashion designing, embroidery, beautician, insurance management etc.

According to an official release, interviews for candidates residing in Vizianagaram will be held at Nehru Yuva Kendra from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 12 and for candidates in Parvathipuram division at mandal development office in Parvathipuram on Sept. 13.
