Those tested locally indicated the presence of pesticides over the permissible limit

  • Ban on sale of aerated beverages in schools, hospital and State Government offices partial
  • Pepsico India Holdings Ltd. has challenged Government notification

BANGALORE: The State Government on Wednesday informed the Karnataka High Court that samples of aerated beverages manufactured by Pepsico India Holdings Ltd. have been sent to the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore, for analysis.

It said the samples of aerated beverages manufactured by Pepsico and tested locally had indicated the presence of pesticides over the permissible limit. It was because of these results that the State Government had prohibited, for the time being, the sale of these beverages in notified public places.

Advocate-General Uday Holla said the State had banned the sale of aerated beverages in schools, hospital and State Government offices only for some time. This was only a partial ban and it was only for a limited period.

Mr. Holla was opposing a petition by Pepsico India Holdings Ltd., Pepsi Foods Private Ltd. and another person who had challenged an August 14, 2006 notification prohibiting the sale and distribution of carbonated beverages in public places.
