`Vyas Samman' conferred on two Hindi writers

NEW DELHI: Despite the present times being known as the age of knowledge, life has become so fast that most people do not get a chance to even think about what they hear or read, said Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit here on Tuesday.

"We don't get a chance to ponder about what we read or hear or even see in our ordinary lives. This is something to be concerned about," she added.

Speaking at a function organised to honour two leading Hindi authors with "Vyas Samman" instituted by the K.K. Birla Foundation, Ms. Dikshit said: "I am glad that there are women like the two awardees tonight who are thoughtfully writing about the past and its bearing on the present."

The Vyas Samman for 2004 was conferred on the noted Hindi writer Mridula Garg, while the award for 2005 went to the Kashmir-born writer Chandrakanta.

"I am very happy that I have got this award in recognition of my work `Katgulab'. The creation is always worth the honour and not the author," said Mridula Garg while accepting the award.

Born in Calcutta in 1938, Mridula Garg studied at Delhi University's School of Economics for some time.

She has to her credit six novels, 11 collections of stories, four plays and two collections of essays.

Chandrakanta, born in 1930 in Srinagar, has through her work told the story of present-day Kashmir with all its problems.
