KOTTAYAM: Two policemen at the Idukki police station were placed under suspension on Wednesday following allegations that the suicide of a 26-year-old youth was due to the mental agony suffered during questioning. The body of Baiju of Mulackal House, Perumthotti, near Thopramkudi in Idukki district, was found hanging from a tree near his house on Wednesday morning. He was a bachelor. Sources said that Baiju, convener of a self-help group, collected Rs.54,000 for distribution among SHG members during Onam. However, the amount kept at his house was allegedly stolen and Baiju and a few members of the SHG filed a complaint before the Circle Inspector, Idukki police station, on Monday. Baiju was called to the police station on Tuesday and the police allegedly treated him as if he was the accused, his friends said. When Baiju returned home he was disheartened, they said. Scores of people thronged the spot where the body was found and the police were not allowed near it by the mob. Idukki RDO P.E. Vijayakumar was allowed to reach the site only after he promised disciplinary action against the guilty. Later, Idukki Superintendent of Police K.K. Chellappan placed Soman and Sebastian, constables at the Idukki police station, under suspension. The body was moved to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
