NALGONDA: A polytechnic student Boddupalli Sharat Chaitanya (16) died on the spot after being knocked down by an RTC bus at his college on Hyderabad road in Nalgonda on Wednesday.

According to the II-town Sub-Inspector E.Sreenivasa Reddy, the Miryalaguda-bound RTC bus hit the boy's bicycle from the rear resulting in his instantaneous death. Chaitanya's father Boddupalli Kondal Rao of Ansari Colony in the town has been the agent of The Hindu for a long time. Sharat joined Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (DME) course after scoring good marks in SSC examination.

Angry students

Irate students of the polytechnic college blocked traffic on the main road for about four hours demanding the arrest of the bus driver and also for a just compensation to the victim's parents.

They demanded that a speed-breaker be arranged to control the speeding vehicles at the college. They raised slogans against the RTC authorities when they visited the spot to console the family members. The students asked the depot manager to pay Rs.5 lakhs as a ex-gratia.

The students budged only after RTC Regional Manager Purushottam and Revenue Divisional Officer R.Hari Singh assured them that all steps would be taken to get maximum benefits for the bereaved family.

The RDO announced Rs.5,000 as immediate relief.
