HYDERABAD: It will take another 10 years to supply drinking water round-the-clock to all areas in the city, according to Municipal Administration Minister Koneru Ranga Rao. A whopping Rs. 2,500 crores is required for providing 24x7 water to all residential areas, he added.

Replying to a question tabled by Akbaruddin Owaisi (MIM) in the Assembly on Wednesday whether round-the-clock water supply was planned for city, Mr. Rao said a pilot project was already being implemented in the Adikmet area.

The Minister said the present requirement of city was 230 million gallons per day (MGD) against the availability of 140 MGD. Osmansagar, Himayatsagar, Singur, Manjira and drawal of Krishna water from Akkampalli were the main sources of supply.

Funds sought

The Government had sent proposals to the Centre under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission to provide funds for improving the infrastructure and construction of more reservoirs. Mr. Owaisi lamented that the city required 260 MGD but 215 MGD was available.

Even though the Krishna phase-II scheme was ready for inauguration shortly, sufficient reservoirs had not been constructed. He wanted the Government to bail out the loss-making Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board by providing subsidies.

Reservoirs in old city

The Minister said six overhead reservoirs were being constructed in the old city to handle water supply. He said 90 MGD would be supplied under the Krishna scheme.
