Health services hit

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Health services in Government hospitals in the district were hit following the 24-hour strike by doctors on Wednesday. A number of patients who visited Government hospitals were put to much hardship. The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) had called the strike demanding correction of anomalies in pay revision.

Outpatient services at Government hospitals came to a standstill. At the General Hospital, apart from the Hospital Superintendent, there was a casualty medical officer and a duty medical officer to take care of any emergency. However, there were no emergency cases, said K.N. Omana, superintendent. Two post-mortems were conducted and emergency procedures such as anti-rabies vaccine were administered to patients. Dr. Omana said the flow of patients was less.

The Indian Medical Association observed a protest day to express their solidarity with the striking doctors in the Government sector. A statement issued by the president and secretary of the IMA said the Government should find an amicable solution to end the strike.

Doctors in Health Services have been on a non-cooperation strike since April 17. In case the Government does not take any initiative to hold talks with the doctors till the end of October, the KGMOA plans to put in mass resignation on November 1, said Junaid Rehman, State Secretary.
