Deadline for sealing banquet halls extended

Decision after many people meet Monitoring Committee

NEW DELHI: Giving a breather to those who are set to marry in the first week of September, the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee on Wednesday extended the deadline for sealing banquet halls in the Capital's residential areas till September 7. Earlier, it was decided to begin the sealing of banquet halls from September 1.

This decision came after a large number of people petitioned the Monitoring Committee requesting it to extend the deadline as they had booked these facilities well in advance and were unable to find a new place to hold marriage receptions at such a short notice. Last week, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi had announced that it would begin the sealing drive following the withdrawal of exemption granted to them under the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006.

Sources in the MCD said the Monitoring Committee has decided to start sealing from September 8 as on that day "shradhs" begin. Since Hindus observe these days with simplicity and do not conduct marriages during this period, most marriages taking place in this marriage season are expected to be held before September 7.

On Wednesday also around 40 brides and bridegrooms met the Monitoring Committee members and pleaded with them to extend the sealing deadline.

Noisy scenes were also witnessed at the Monitoring Committee office as desperate parents and people raised slogans against the MCD and the Government for not considering their pleas.

However, the Monitoring Committee members patiently listened to them and subsequently decided to extend the deadline by a week.
